Kinkakuji, or the Golden Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple situated in the scenic northern part of Kyoto, Japan. Originally constructed in 1397 as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was later converted into a Zen temple following his death. The temple is renowned for its stunning architecture, with its top two floors covered in gold leaf, which gives it its iconic golden appearance.
